WHERE TO EAT

University Cafés and Restaurants offer cheap meals throughout the week: additionally nearby bars and restaurants also have very cheap meal options.

In the city there are many different food options available, such as bars, restaurants, taverns, wineries, etc. In the old town Carmen there are many local restaurants where you can find everything from small Italian restaurants to typical Spanish bodegas, if you're looking for somewhere to eat you can eat lunch or dinner here very cheaply.

On the promenade of the Malvarrosa beach you can find many restaurants, the majority of which only serve typical Valencian dishes, this is an area we would really reccomend to enjoy a good paella.

In the Cánovas area which is very close to the Gran Vía Marques del Turia you will find a large number of restaurants and taverns along with many pubs.

It's also worth mentioning the Univerity area along Blasco Ibanez where there are many bars and restaurants offering cheap menus for students.

WHERE TO BUY FOOD

Valencia has a large number of supermarkets where you can do your weekly food shopping. Some of the most popular chains are Mercadona, and Consum which are pretty cheap. They are open from around 9:15 in the morning to 21:30 at night. They are closed on Sundays.

There are also Supercor shops which are small supermarkets where you can buy food, books, gifts, and recharge your mobiles etc, these are open all day from 8:00 in the morning until 02:00 in the morning and the one closest to university is on Calle de Ramón Llull, 19, next door to the Happy Erasmus office and it's open every day of the week.

In some of the big supermarket chains such as Carrefour and Al Campo you can do all sorts of shopping from electrical appliances, to home decorations. These supermarkets are open on Sundays too.

You can also go to gas stations to buy ice or tabacco for example and many of them have small shops which are open 24/7 which is the same for the gas station at Plaza Xúquer, which is very close to the universities.

We would also reccomend visiting the markets (The Central Market - Mercado Central is one example) but they exist throughout the city. Here you will find the best culinary produce in Valencia, fresh fish, excellent meat, fruit and vegetables from Valencia and more. The Central Market is the most important in Valencia, where you will find the highest quality produce at the lowest prices. You should also check out Mercado del Cabanal (situated at the end of Blasco Ibanez nearest the beach) But it's only open in the morning!

To but fruit and vegetables we would reccoment visiting a fruteria (greengrocer), there are loads of these in all the districts of Valencia. Usually they have lots of fresh cheap produce which is better than the supermarkets. They also have a large variety of other products including olives, eggs, and soft drinks. They are usually open every day of the week.

EATING TIMES

Eating times are usually a bit later than the rest of Europe, breakfast is eaten between 7:30 and 10, lunch is eaten in restaurants between 14:00 and 15:30 and dinner is between 21:00 and 21:30.
